The committee held cake sales throughout Saturday at Foster’s at the Strand and the airport.

Mother-of-three, Ms Watler was diagnosed with kidney disease two years ago. Her own medical treatment is covered by her medical insurance, but the expenses of her donor, Elizabeth Peña, are not.

Lean on Me’s Richard Christian said: ‘I know she’s not the one who is sick, but it seems unfair that the donor is not covered. Lean on Me wanted to help out as much as we could.’

When none of Ms Watler’s family turned out to be suitable donors, her childhood friend Ms Peña, from Nicaragua volunteered and was found to be compatible.

Ms Peña and Ms Watler grew up together in Nicaragua before Ms. Watler moved to Cayman more than 20 years ago. The transplant is scheduled to be done next month at the Houston Medical Centre.

Chairperson of Lean on Me, Derri Lee said the group would carry out another round of fund raising at Kirk’s and Hurley’s next weekend.

‘We hope to be able to hand over at least $1,000 to the donor for her expenses,’ said Ms. Lee.

Anyone who wishes to donate can contact Ms. Lee on 926 7724.
