PORT-OF-SPAIN CMC Olympic silver medallist Richard Thompson was among six athletes honoured as Trinidad and Tobago celebrated its 46th anniversary of political independence on Sunday.
Thompson, who placed second in the 100 metres at the Beijing Olympics, received the Chaconia Medal (Gold) for his exploits.
The 23-year old clocked a personal best 9.89 seconds as he followed home Jamaican sprint marvel Usain Bolt.
Thompson picked up his second silver medal at the Games when he anchored the sprint relay team to second place behind the Jamaicans.
The other members of the relay team – Marc Burns, Keston Bledman, Emmanuel Callender, and Aaron Armstrong – were also awarded the Chaconia Medal.
Sprinter Darrel Brown, who was injured during the semi-finals of the 100 metres and took no further part in the meet, was also awarded the honour.
