The Department of Community Rehabilitation (formerly known as the Department of Probation and Aftercare) plays a significant role in the supervision and rehabilitation of adults who have committed offences.
Some of the department’s services are offered through the preparation of pre-sentencing reports to the court and home background reports to the Parole Board, provision of various group and individual sessions (such as domestic violence for the perpetrator, anger management, stress management, time to change and parole support groups to name a few) and supervision of community based court orders and parole licences both in Grand Cayman and in Cayman Brac.
Due to the nature of DCR work, a collaborative approach between DCR, other local agencies and the community on a whole is essential in meeting the needs of the clients. Based on this notion, in 2006 DCR started a week of activities known as Probation and Parole Week, which has become an annual event for the department.
This not only brings awareness to the public about the services of DCR, but this week also educates and stimulates partner agencies to be creative and proactive in their approach on issues that at times can be extremely challenging when working with persons that have offended.
Hosting its third annual Probation and Parole Week, DCR’s theme is Exploring Creative Partnerships for Offenders with Mental Health Issues.
Due to the increasing concerns by DCR and various agencies, this topic was considered to be an appropriate and timely one as a way of exploring the best way for us to truly address the issue of persons who appear before the criminal system with mental health illnesses.
The week of activities is scheduled from 21 – 28 September, both in Grand Cayman and in Cayman Brac and the public is encouraged to attend any and all of the events below or contact the Department of Community Rehabilitation for more information at 949-1693 Grand Cayman and 948-1521 Cayman Brac.
Although the entire week is exciting and important for DCR, the highlight of the week’s activities will be the conference, which will take place at the Marriott Grand Cayman. In addition to local guest speakers, DCR welcomes visiting guests Judge Kathleen Gosselin and Ms Denise McKinney, from the United States to speak on the role of a mental health court.
Information from these guest speakers will not only offer the Cayman Islands alternative options to consider, but this will provide information on the role that a mental health court has along with a drug treatment court, which the Cayman Islands presently has in operation.
Due to limited space registration for the Conference will end at 4pm today. For details, contact the Grand Cayman office.
