Squash kids looking good for the future

Cayman’s squash scene has many talented youngsters who could be world class in a few years judging by the quality shown in the recent junior championships.

The Kirk Office Equipment (Ricoh) National Junior Squash Championships 2008 was a huge success with around 50 juniors taking part.

Youth coach Dean Watson said: ‘This year we had three divisions from Intermediate players to the Elite B and Elite A squads.

‘Hosting an event like this is always entertaining and provides an electrifying atmosphere at South Sound Squash Club.

‘This year’s finalists were: James Fietelburg who had a great match against Samuel Lancaster, with James slightly overpowering Samuel, although they both had a great battle to the end.

‘In the Elite B section, Nicholas Cameron desperately tried to get some length to his game, while Josh taking control of the ‘T’ far more than Cameron, but making too many errors forced the win in favour of Cameron.’

In the Elite ‘A’ final, Jake Kelly, last year’s champion was off his game, which Cameron Stafford took full advantage of to win this year’s main event.

Watson added; ‘It was a wonderful tournament by all. The next Junior Club Championships will be held from December 4-6.’
