Cayman Airways has acquired an extra jet for its fleet to support additional winter service.
A 737-300, a sister aircraft to the other three CAL jets, is registered VP-CKZ, and is on dry lease for a normal lease period, said CAL’s CEO Designate Mr. Olson Anderson.
The plane, which is being leased from International Lease Finance Corporation, where CAL’s other planes are leased from, is to travel to Costa Rica this week to be painted in the CAL livery, before returning to Grand Cayman in mid December to start service, in time for the additional routes coming on stream.
The airline now has a fleet of four 737-300s and two Twin Otter aircraft. CAL’s two 737-200s are up for sale and they are in contract negotiations for both of them, said Mr. Anderson.
‘The 737-300 is a bigger airplane and it’s a more comfortable airplane for the passenger so it’s going to be good for us in terms of reliability and for the passenger in terms of comfort,’ Mr. Anderson said.
CAL will offer twice weekly direct seasonal service between Grand Cayman and both Washington DC and Chicago from this December.
The Chicago seasonal flight resumes on 17 December while the inaugural flight to Washington DC is 13 December.
Other routes the airline is planning for this winter are Central American routes La Ceiba in Honduras and Panama.
‘La Ceiba, we’re going to start there as soon as we get route rights to fly in there, which should come any day now,’ said Mr. Anderson, adding that they are hoping to have this route running by Christmas.
‘Panama is going to be a little more difficult so we’ve set the middle to end of January as a start date just because the route rights may take longer.’
