According to statistics, at the end of 2007 an estimated 230,000 people were living with HIV and AIDS in the Caribbean. Some 20,000 people were newly infected during 2007, and there were 14,000 deaths due to AIDS.

The Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership, a Pan-Caribbean coalition of 83 television and radio companies, was formed in May 2006 to invigorate and increase the effectiveness of the broadcast media’s contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Kafara was one of 10 representatives from Caribbean media houses who attended the workshop and she will use information garnered from the event to produce a five minute televised segment to help raise awareness. The segment will be broadcasted throughout the Caribbean on the Live Up Show.

Of the experience Ms. Augustine said, ‘It was a great opportunity for me to meet with reporters from all over the Caribbean to discuss how we could join together in the fight against this deadly disease. Fortunately Cayman has a very low HIV infection rate but we cannot be complacent and we must continue to educate the public, especially our youth, about protecting themselves from HIV/AIDS.’

In a press release, Cayman 27 said having Ms Augustine participate in the workshop is part of the broadcaster’s ongoing commitment to training Caymanians in the media industry.

The Live Up Show is a regional magazine programme produced by CBMP and Caribbean Media Corporation. The date for the airing of the programme featuring the 10 regional journalists has not been set yet. That information will be released to the public as soon as it is available, the release stated.
