Arrangements for hospitals, banks, post offices

All district health centres, general practice and specialist clinics at the Cayman Islands Hospital have been cancelled until further notice, the Health and Safety Authority announced.

All elective surgeries for Friday 6 November, 2008 have also been cancelled.

The Pharmacy at the Cayman Islands Hospital will be open from 6am until 10am tomorrow (Friday).

Patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases, asthma, lung diseases or hypertension and who require additional medication should check immediately to ensure they have sufficient quantities. If patients require additional supplies, contact the nearest District Health Centre or the Cayman Islands Hospital Pharmacy for refills. Call 244-2715 giving full name, name of the medication(s) and the prescription number(s).

Radiology and Laboratory services will continue to operate as scheduled tomorrow.

All dialysis patients should immediately make contact with the Dialysis Unit to make arrangements to be dialysed.

The Cayman Islands Hospital Accident & Emergency Unit will remain open 24 hours for emergency medical treatment, however ambulances are unable to respond to calls after the onset of tropical storm force winds until the all clear is given. All other clinics and services will be closed as of 6 pm today (Thursday).

For persons who may be emotionally vulnerable during this time the Health Services has advised that a mental health professional will be available at each shelter to offer counsel and support.

It is important that those on medication ensure that they have at least one week supply available.

Persons who may find themselves unable to cope should avoid isolation and are encouraged to stay with relatives and friends who are able to offer coping skills.

All Mental Health Patients requiring refills should attend the Mental Health Department at the Cayman Islands Hospital between the hours of 8am and 9am Friday.

The Health Services also reminded the public that the Cayman Islands Hospital is not an option for general sheltering during a hurricane, according to the Cayman Islands Clearing Banks.

The banks will not reopen until the all clear is issued.

The Cayman Islands Clearing Banks consist of the following members: Butterfield Bank, Cayman National Bank, FirstCaribbean International Bank, Royal Bank of Canada, Scotiabank & Trust, Fidelity Bank, and HSBC.

Post offices closed at 5pm and also will no reopen until the all clear is given.
