Toddler needs medical help

Born with a bilateral cleft lip and cleft palate toddler Jasper Del Rosario’s still has a long way to go.

After numerous operation to repair the cleft plate in the roof of his mouth young Jasper developed another condition, which has resulted in the lost of one of his eyes. The toddler also has retinal detachment.

Jasper has undergone extensive reconstructive facial surgery, but he still has a long way to go with more surgeries involved.

Cleft lip and cleft palate are birth defects in which the upper lip and the palate in the roof of the mouth do not fuse together properly while the baby is in the womb. Fortunately, the condition is treatable.

His mother, Charo May Del Rosario said Jasper still has a number of operations to go through to address his condition, which are scheduled for sometime between February and March at the Miami Children’s Hospital.

She says the insurance will cover 80 per cent of the cost but the family is seeking help with travel expenses and a place to stay while Jasper is undergoing surgery.

The couple is also looking for donations as the baby may need a new or false eye.

‘Jasper is tough and a good baby who loves to watch Barney,’ said Mrs. Del Rosario. ‘He cannot walk on his own but delights in running around in the baby walker. Getting the operations will improve his quality of life drastically.’

Sometime before the end of the year she will travel with Jasper to Miami for another surgery. During the stay, Jasper will also be seen by a team of medical professionals.

‘We ask you to please open your hearts to Jasper, that he may complete this stage in life and that he may have a more normal life.’
