Find, keep life’s balance

How do we juggle so many things at one time? We live in an age where routine daily habits have been brought within the dynamic of multi-tasking. We are operating at a higher level of intensity in the most simple and mundane of daily tasks.

For example, how many things do you do while driving your car?

Text messaging? Eating lunch? Talking on your cell? Checking your look in the mirror? Reading? Ask any woman how many things she is doing in the morning trying to get the family out the door to school and work, and she will definitely be involved in some multi-tasking.

Now, multi-tasking is not necessarily a bad thing; however, too much ‘go-go-go’ and not enough cessation of activity creates an imbalance. That imbalance results in fatigue, injury, irritability and lack of appreciation of daily life.

Like the proverbial hamster on the treadmill, we get up each day heavy in spirit and energy to face another day of treadmill activity.

Many people find their identity in doing things, keeping busy, and never resting. Some even hold an outdated view that resting indicates laziness. Other people fear that if they stop and take time to rest, their world and all the things to be done will get out of control. Imagine – people tell me they feel guilty if they take a break.

A healthy and balanced lifestyle requires rest as well as activity. Rest, including a mental break from the ongoing and ever-present ‘to do’ list. It restores and revitalizes us so that we can return to life energized and happier.

We all have lists of projects; chores; work demands; things to do; events to attend; and matters to deal with. Especially with the busy Holiday Season approaching.

Balance is your key to savour life. Without balance, we lose appreciation because we are too exhausted and overwhelmed to appreciate. With the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas season, find balance, develop a balanced lifestyle, and choose to be balanced. It is a lifestyle decision.
