Fabian Anthony Reid, 22, was remanded in custody after appearing in Summary Court on 24 December on charges arising from a report of rape on 19 December.
Crown Counsel Alistair Cumming told Magistrate Grace Donalds that Reid was charged with rape, possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit an offence and indecent assault.
It is the policy of Cayman Free Press to not report names of persons charged with sex offences unless or until they are convicted. In this case, however, the police sent out a news release to all media and named the man.
In court, Mr. Cumming said he did not know if the defendant intended to apply for bail or if he wanted to wait for an attorney.
Reid, a Jamaican national, told the court he wanted to find out if he could be bailed over Christmas. ‘I’ve been fully co-operative,’ he said.
If he could not be bailed, he asked to be remanded to Northward Prison so that he could get visits from his family.
The magistrate asked if he had a lawyer. ‘I was wondering if I could get legal aid,’ he replied.
The magistrate said the charges were serious and could attract legal aid. She asked that someone assist Reid in filling out the necessary application form so that progress could be made.
She directed that the matter be brought back to court on Tuesday 6 January. Reid was remanded to Northward Prison until then.
