Barely having paused for breath over the festive period, Cayman’s dedicated runners were back out there on Sunday morning.
This time it was the Fuji 5k, a perennial season opener sponsored by Cayman Camera, and organized by the Phoenix Athletic Club with Jerry Harper controlling things.
This popular offering, provided some speed training for the Cancer Society run/walk this weekend and Cross Island Relay the following weekend.
With Scott Brittain and Russell Coleman present but not competing because they are in serious training for the Boston Marathon in April, Marius Acker had other rivals to worry about.
This time it was Ulrich Fluhme, who like Brittain works for UBS and is a speedy marathon runner who has done an Ironman in nine hours.
Acker had an early battle with Fluhme but passed him towards the end and won by around 25 seconds.
Third was Hayden Ishister. First woman home was Beth Schreader who was seventh overall. Next female in was Julie Ann Pearson and third woman to finish was Lauretta Bennett.
Acker said: ‘I think my winning time was 16 minutes and 38 seconds. I’m pleased with it. I hoped not to run hard but Ulrich took off. I didn’t know who he was but apparently he’s just visiting for two weeks.
‘He actually ran with Scott and Russell on Friday. He took off and I let him go but when I started chasing him I didn’t catch him as quickly as I expected to and thought: ‘Oh no, trouble!’
‘Eventually I caught him and just stayed behind him. He tried surging and going slow tactics but I stuck with him and towards the end I started pushing and he stayed with me for a little while then let me go.
‘I didn’t want to race this hard because I’ve got the Miami Half-Marathon next Sunday.’
Fluhme ran the New York Marathon in 2 hours 34 minutes last year and he would be a threat to the top runners if he settled here.
