Local basketball is making early steps to prepare for international competition this year.
The senior men’s basketball team is currently in training at Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
The squad comes out Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30pm onwards.
Head Coach Daniel Augustine has the players do a plethora of drills that focus on everything from basic footwork to jump-shooting and team defense.
A number of players have been coming out to try-out for the team such as Collin Anglin, Omar Clarke, Dwight O’Garro, William Peguero Jr, Sebastian Sache and Deandre Simpson.
The following players were also invited to come out to earn a spot: Jason Campbell, Chad Leslie, Kael Leslie, Kevin Maxwell, Jonathon Mitchell, Samuel O’Garro and Antonio Thompson.
There are a few players on-island who show up as a way to stay sharp for local competition. Among them are Brandon Glasgow and Mike Morgan.
In addition a number of overseas players are in the mix for a team spot including Philip Barnes, Marco De La Cruz, Jorge Ebanks, Jerome Narcisse, Shaad O’Garro, Lloyd Samuels and Cory Thompson.
This year’s national team selection was based on last season’s player statistics for the senior men’s and U19 Boys league.
The squad is in training for the 2009 Island Games in June in Aland, Finland and the inaugural 2009 CARICOM Invitational Games (sometimes called the Caribbean Games) in Trinidad in late July.
