PWC Open served up great times

The 2009 PriceWaterhouseCoppers Cayman Islands Open Tennis tournament wrapped up in dramatic fashion last week at the Cayman Islands Tennis Club in South Sound.

The tournament not only turned out to be a truly international affair but was arguably the best and most successful open tennis tournament that Cayman has ever had.

The men’s Open Singles had 40 participants while the woman’s Open Singles had 15 participants. There were also strong fields in the men’s singles 40 and over and in a new division: men’s singles 55 and over.

Not to be outdone were the men’s, women’s and mixed doubles divisions which all had extremely strong participants.

The men’s Open Singles Final had two newcomers for this years’ final. The eventual winner, Juan Rios, was once ranked 261 on the ATP Tour. He not only played for Puerto Rico in the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, but he is the current Davis Cup Captain of Puerto Rico.

Rios proved to be too much for the new Ritz Carlton tennis pro Valerij Gejsman beating him 6-0, 7-6 in straight sets for the 2009 title. Although Valerij struggled in the first set, both players provided some fine tennis for the 200 odd people who came to the CI Tennis Club to watch.

To get to the finals, Juan Rios beat Rob Seward 6-2, 6-2 while Valerij Gejsman beat the past three-time title holder Eduardo Torres in the semi-finals 6-2, 6-3.

In the women’s open draw, we had the most talented group of ladies to ever participate in the Open Championships. In a thrilling exhibition of tennis, Vilma Matienzo, another Puerto Rican, played Rachel Rivers.

Vilma is currently #4 in Puerto Rico and Rachel was a Division 1 US University player. Rachel played a hard fought first set which she won 6-4 against Vilma. But after injuring her shoulder Rachel saw her lead slip in the second set.

Once she was down 0-3, Rachel decided she could not continue and Vilma would nab the victory.

The final results were as follows:

In the Men’s Open final Juan Rios defeated Valerij Gejsman 6-0, 7-6.

For the Men’s Open doubles final Uli Hoppe and Valerij Gejsman defeated Adam Bayley and Rob Seward 6-3, 6-3.

In the Men’s 40s final Maddallosso Roberto defeated Paolo Polloni in straight sets 6-1, 7-6. For the doubles final Paolo Polloni and Carloziun defeated Callergari and Roberto.

In the Men’s 55’s final Peter O’Leary defeated Gilles Aubert 6-2, 6-1.

For the Women’s Open final Vilma Matienzo defeated Rachel Rivers 4-6, 3-0 retired from injury.

For the Women’s doubles final Rachel Rivers and Vilma Matienzo defeated Carrol Reid and Patricia Calder 6-1, 6-0.

Finally in the Mixed Open doubles final Juan Rios and Vilma Matienzo defeated Adam Bayley and Adi House 6-4, 6-4.

The CI Tennis Club would really like to take this time to thank the sponsors of this great tournament. Main sponsor, PriceWaterHouseCoopers not only provided the prize money, but also had 10 participants in the men’s Open division. The Tennis Club cannot thank PriceWaterHouseCoopers enough for their generosity.

The Tennis Club would also like to thank Caybrew, Cayman’s local beer, for supplying beverages during the final night of the tournament and Cayman Airways with there assistance in bringing down some international players.

Thanks also go to all of the international participants that were able to make it from Puerto Rico and Italy along with all of the Cayman tennis pros.
