No surprises here

College hoops have seen many great moments already this year.

From the epic six OT classic between Syracuse and Connecticut in the Big East Tournament to the improbable upset of Tennessee by Ball State in the NCAA women’s tourney fans have enjoyed plenty.

The Final Four for both the men and women was also fantastic. The men saw Michigan State pull off a great upset over Connecticut to reach the title game. Meanwhile the women witnessed Louisville nab an improbable slot in the title game with last minute dramatics against Oklahoma.

The title games though were a mixed bag. The final results saw no surprises as preseason favourites North Carolina and the Connecticut women added one more national title to their respective trophy cases.

On the other hand the way those teams won was emphatic. In the case of Carolina, the Tarheels beat down Michigan State 89-72 as the stars shined bright for UNC. Ty Lawson had 21 points and six assists, Tyler Hansborough had 18 points and seven rebounds and sharp-shooter Wayne Ellington had 19 points.

In the women’s game the Huskies beat Louisville 76-54 to complete their undefeated season. Star player Tina Charles (who has Jamaican heritage) lead the way with 25 points and 19 rebounds. Maya Moore and Renee Montgomery both had 18 points.

Fans might linger briefly on how dominant the winners were. The Tarheels ran the table in the ACC and were focused solely on making the Final Four for a chance to win. The Huskies went to prove they ahd no equal as they ebat all their opponents by double digits.

But more than anything else fans can take with them the players and team that did better than expected. Who knew Florida State would get in so high in the men’s bracket? Who knew Florida would hold their own for the women?

The Madness synonymous with March may be over but the memories from this year are bound to linger for months ahead.
