Cayman’s swimmers are doing far better than expected at the Carifta Championships in Aruba.
Lara Butler, 14, has exceeded all expectations and by Saturday evening had won three medals. Golds in the 200 and 400 metres individual medleys and bronze in the 800m free.
Cayman’s team of 22 are expecting a clutch of medals but they didn’t expect so many golds so early.
Seiji Groome, 15, started the gold rush on Thursday night when he swam a personal best in the 200m breast to win in a personal best time. At 15 he was the youngest finalist in that race.
Coach Dominic Ross said: ‘It’s going really well. It’s a fast competition and some of the other teams are very strong but we’re doing great. Apart from the medals we’re getting a lot of our swimmers in the finals which is very encouraging.’
