Address prison

In seeking to clarify supervision of its rehabilitation programme at the farm at Northward, the Director of Prisons, Mr. Rattray, speaking on local television on Friday, 3 April, suggests that a suitable comparison is a teacher who is expected to monitor the activities of 26 students in a class for every single second.

The director may not be aware that one of the most fundamental tenets of teacher responsibility is to ensure optimum supervision of students in their care, at all times, hence the old saying about teachers having to have ‘eyes in the backs of their heads’.

Clearly, the supervision of prisoners on rehabilitation programmes as well as the absence of an adequate perimeter fence are two areas that need to be addressed urgently by the director of Northward Prison.
