There’s just so much to do. Even our tropical-island paradise life is fraught with a never-ending to do list, and many people are reeling from the long-term effects of chronic pressure resulting in chronic stress.
The effects of this continual stress, whether imagined or real, are seen in the body’s immune system.
The immune system is our built-in natural ability to maintain health and to fight disease. Chronic stress and its many side-effects such as insomnia, seriously affect immunity.
This is evident in the large numbers of people seen in clinics and medical waiting rooms around Cayman.
I recently encountered a gentleman rushing into a medical clinic, rather wildly waving his arms, spouting off something about it being ‘all the government’s fault, the condition we find ourselves in’.
That man is headed for lifelong health challenges if he continues to sport that attitude. Personal health and wellness are matters of personal responsibility, no matter what external forces exert pressure on our lives.
To be truthful, we all know how to relax and we all know the importance of relaxation in maintaining health and wellness.
One helpful tool for keeping things in perspective and order is the ‘to do’ list, or as some married couples call it: ‘the honey-do list’.
What works for me is being a ‘post-it girl’. Post-it notes are great, quick and easy reminders of what needs to be done. Post-its are colourful little flags that tell us to pick up an item, make a call, or return a book.
Once the task is accomplished, tossing the post-it sticker brings a huge sense of accomplishment and relief. Post-it notes that deal with everyday tasks provide an efficient system of getting things done. Post-its of a grander nature remind us to investigate a trip to Italy, plan a cruise or book a night at our favourite local restaurant.
So, this summer, plan for more relaxation, rest and relinquishing of a pressured ‘to do’ list with colourful post-its. They work well for children as well, and can bring laughter when discovered.
Maintaining balance and order are important parts of a healthy lifestyle.
