Many wanting to use the new state-of-the art boxing gym have become frustrated at the wait, but head coach Donie Anglin is confident that it will be open soon.
The Dunstan Dalmain Ebanks Boxing Gymnasium at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex was officially opened in May, just before the general elections.
It was one of the outgoing PPM’s final achievements in government, costing $1.3 million. But all the budding Mike Tysons and Manny Pacquiaos have had to wait before they could pull the gloves on there.
The new government under the UDP is keen to open the doors to the general public but a few finishing touches had to be applied first.
‘It’s definitely not a political reason why the gym hasn’t opened yet,’ said Anglin. ‘There little things to be done, like materials for the floor which had not arrived. The air conditioning needs to be completed too.
‘The contractor is off island at present but will be back soon and hopefully the gym will be open by the end of August.
‘The speed ball is up, so too heavy bags, the skipping ropes are there and people will be able to work out. We want ready in time for when the schools re-open in September.’
