Gala to help fund cancer registry

An upcoming breast cancer gala dinner will help fund the establishment of a cancer registry in Cayman.

The prevalence of cancer is unknown in the Cayman Islands because it does not have a cancer registry to track the numbers and types of cancers seen here.

Legal firm Maples and Calder has signed on as a platinum sponsor of the gala Dinner, to be held at the Ritz-Carlton on 17 October.

‘The creation of a breast cancer registry in Cayman would be an immensely valuable resource,’ said Maples and Calder partner Paul Lumsden.

‘We are very happy to continue our contribution to such an important initiative and we encourage other businesses to assist in whatever way they can.’

All proceeds of the gala dinner will be donated to breast cancer-related initiatives by the Cayman Islands Cancer Society and the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens.

One of the strategic projects that the funds will help to launch is the establishment of a local cancer registry which will assist the government in addressing healthcare needs of the community and identify requirements for appropriate medical care and Island facilities.

‘We are very appreciative of the support that Maples has shown towards such a worthy cause,’ said James Bovell, owner and broker of RE/MAX Cayman Islands, which is hosting the event.

He added: ‘Maples’ contribution will aid in local breast cancer projects and recovery efforts. Their sponsorship is an amazing gift to our community and our event would not be a success without their support.’

This is the second year the black-tie charity event will be held.
