Netball has returned in exciting fashion in Cayman.
With men playing alongside women in the local mixed league the sport gets an added boost in athleticism and skill.
Last Saturday saw the second week of games in the 2009 Cayman Islands Netball Association mixed league.
The netball courts at Truman Bodden Sports Complex witnessed a pair of games from 6:30pm.
On one court Roma took down Rising Stars World Gym 30-24 while team Unity tied with Rising Stars Money Gram 11 all.
Roma came into Saturday boasting most of last year’s team and plenty of athletic players.
Among them were basketball standout Shawn Smith and football extraordinaire Zoenief Walker.
Smith rose to prominence this year winning the three point shoot-out and the national men’s league title with the Wolves basketball team.
Walker meanwhile is known for her prowess in all forms of football indoors (via five-a-side) and out.
Both were big factors on the night. Smith displayed great jumping ability at Goal Shooter as he often soared over his defender for scores and actively lunged for balls.
Walker was quick on her feet at Wing Defense in disrupting passing lanes and making the right pass to her team-mates.
Yet Rising Stars had a slim 12-11 advantage by half-time as the scores read 8-5 in the first quarter and 4-6 in the second.
In spite of inspired play from Goal Shooter Collin Anglin and Goal Defense Jessica Ramoon the Stars would not hold their lead in the second half.
Roma jumped out in front 9-5 in the third and put away the Stars 10-4 in the fourth quarter.
Goal Attack Nicole Pringle, Wing Attack Andrienne Rowlston, Centre Clifton Ricketts, Goal Defense Paula Huighes and Goal Keeper Marvin Gordon also did well in the Roma victory.
The subs were Kay Copeland, Michelle Matthews, Michael Dehaney and Fabian Steele.
Rising Stars saw Goal Attack Letanya Thompson, WA Brittney Barton, C Kemar Hyman, WD Jessica Anderson and GK Delroy Myles.
The subs were Jodi Rockett, Gary Palmer, Tricia Skyers-Palacio, Patrice Boothe and Rolfo Whittaker.
In the other game great defense and short ball possession combined to hamper most offensive efforts.
The scores would read 1-1 in the first, 3-2 in the second to Unity, 4-3 in the third to Rising Stars and 4-4 in the fourth quarter.
Yet Rising Stars seemed the more organized team. In the second half sub David Taylor did well to get to balls on offense and get decent looks to score.
The starters for Rising Stars were GS Damian Seymour, GA Melissa Rankine, WA Josefa Martinez, C Felix Manzanares, WD Mariscka Blackman, GD Kady Myers and GK Delroy.
Joining Taylor on the bench were Dionne Anglin, Alton Williams, Nardia Syers and Shelly.
Unity would field GS David Wilson, GA Trudy Denton, WA Elsie, C Wayne Fyne, WD Sophia Wilson, GD Xanya Smith and GK Kiegel Atkinson.
The subs were Natilee Shaw, Trudy Williamson, Sabre Dickens, Elaine Bromfield and Juliet Mullings.
The next games in the league are tonight at 6:30pm at Truman Bodden. Rawlingson and Hunter take on Rising Stars Money Gram while Guy Harvey’s Ocean Foundation All Stars battle team Unity.
