Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl is joining the ranks of celebrity mothers Madonna and Angelina Jolie by adopting a baby from outside the United States.
Ms Heigl and husband Josh Kelley have completed their adoption of a baby girl from Korea.
Ms Heigl’s spokeswoman Melissa Kates says the couple named the 10-month-old Nancy Leigh, after the actress’s mother Nancy and her sister Margaret Leigh, who Ms Heigl’s parents adopted from Korea. The girl will go by the nickname Naleigh.
Ms Heigl told TV chat show host Ellen DeGeneres in an interview to air on Friday that she planned to adopt even before she married Mr. Kelley, and that her family has a history of adoption, because her own sister is of Korean descent and adopted.
The baby girl will turn one year old in November, and as it happens her birthday comes one day before Ms Heigl’s own birthday. Jokingly, Ms Heigl told Ms DeGeneres that at first she thought that was a sign, but later realised she ‘basically forfeited’ her birthday for the rest of her life.
Ms Heigl also said the baby is special needs.
The couple is putting photos of their daughter up on jasonheiglfoundation.org.
Ms Heigl plays Dr. Izzie Stevens on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and is currently shooting the film Life as We Know It. She and Mr. Kelley, a singer-songwriter, have been married since 2007.
