They’re by far the greatest team the world has ever seen… Well, not quite, but they the CFP Buzz Crusaders took their first steps to world domination last Thursday night.
It may have only been the Division 3 championship match of the WestTel 5-a-side football league at the King’s Sports Centre, but for the victors it was on par with a World Cup final.
Captained superbly by tough-tackling Scotsman Jason Bainbridge, CFP Buzz beat Hi Tension 5-1 in an absorbing game.
Hi Tension were the undefeated league champions who had beaten Buzz twice and drawn in the regular season. But newly formed Buzz were still finding their way and by the time the teams met in the playoffs two weeks ago, Hi Tension tasted defeat for the first time, 5-2.
The scene was set for a thrilling final and it lived up to expectations as casual passersby stopped to watch, not believing that they were seeing such glorious action for free.
A goal apiece by Buzz’s deadly striker force of Dan Kelly and Andy Harrison gave them a 2-0 lead at half-time. Chris Pearson, Hi Tension’s best player, pulled one back early in the second half but Kelly and Harrison struck again.
Michael ‘Beckenbauer’ Klein grabbed a fifth with a phantom goal in the dying seconds to seal the 5-2 victory for Buzz.
Ray Singh, King’s organiser, deserves credit for the rapid growth and popularity of the 5-a-side leagues. The next ones start in five weeks and already 30 teams have entered.
