Local gymnastics is hitting its mark in Cayman sports and continues to represent abroad. Proof of that can be seen in its latest competition.
Thirteen members of the Motions Unlimited Gymnastic team are headed to the Coral Springs Gymnasium in Coral Springs Florida this weekend.
There they will compete in the 2009 Fright Invite Gymnastics Competition.
Representing Cayman are Destiny Campbell, Fiona Cockhill, Giselle Ebanks, Arielle Farley and Reagan Rutty, Abigail Lindsay, Jessica Lloyd, Morgan Lloyd, Sami Peene, Haley Wilkom, Hillary Cockhill, Lauren Hill and Katie Scott.
Coaching the side are head coach Kelley Paz, Heather Waisanen and Motions Unlimited owner Sandra Alberga.
The Cayman team competes in three different levels and are the only Caribbean club attending.
According to Coach Paz, the girls will be showcasing a broad range of skills.
‘The levels the girls are competing in require them to showcase the basic gymnastic skills of handstands, cartwheels and back handsprings, amongst others.’
Although the girls are each paying their own way, they did receive uniform sponsorship from the local gymnastics association.
According to Coach Waisanen the girls are ready.
‘We are very excited to have the opportunity to show off the skills the girls have achieved using the facilities we have here.
‘The girls have been training for 12 to 15 hours a week and, for some of them, this is their first opportunity to compete.’
