Lasers spotlight club’s growing profile

The 2009 Bacardi Laser National Championships will be held this weekend at the Cayman Islands Sailing Club in Red Bay.

The laser is a one person Olympic class dinghy and is one of the most popular sailboats in the world. The CISC expects to have 20 boats competing in the championship, making it one of the largest laser regattas in the Caribbean.

Last year’s champion, Nick Taylor will be defending his title against some of the best sailors in the Cayman Islands, including Mark Clarke, Rob Jackson, Tomeaka McTaggart, and youth sailors Chris Delaney, Stuart Jennings, and Alex Walton.

Jon Faris, CISC member, is running the event and expects it to be a great weekend of sailing. ‘With a big fleet and a windy forecast, this will be one of the best regattas of the year.’

The weekend begins with registration and Bacardi happy hour on Friday at 5pm. Racing begins on Saturday at 2pm followed by dinner sponsored by the Doghouse restaurant. Sailing starts at 1pm on Sunday. There will be an awards ceremony and bar-b-q after the final race.

The regatta is open to all sailors and the CISC is encouraging all sailors to participate. There are boats available for hire.
