Spring training has arrived early for Cayman’s adult softball players.
The Cayman Islands Little League adult co-ed winter season starts Monday 18 January and will continue on until late April.
The league will feature two or three divisions, depending on demand, said programme co-ordinator Alan Markoff.
‘We have a league that is very competitive with a many experienced players; a league that’s developmental in nature; and league that’s in between.’
Teams play 12 regular season games at the Field of Dreams, usually with one game a week Monday through Thursday at 8:15pm. Play-offs follow the regular season and all teams make the play-offs.
Teams consist of both male and female players. League rules require at least three female players in the game at all times.
Markoff said he wasn’t sure if the programme would have a developmental league this season.
‘We’ve been running what we call a ‘C-League’ for several seasons now,’ he said. ‘It’s a recreational league that plays on a smaller field and uses a softer ball that’s less dangerous for beginning players. Many of the teams that have started in that league have moved up to the more competitive leagues as they’ve gotten better. I don’t know yet if we’ll have enough interest in the C League or not this season.’
People interested in registering a team for the winter league should attend the captain’s meeting at the Field of Dreams clubhouse on Monday 11 January. Team season fees of CI$1,250 are due on that date.
There is also a $10 player registration fee due for all new players to the programme. That fee is good for three years, which encompasses six co-ed softball seasons.
Individuals without teams can also give their names to the league co-ordinator, who will attempt to find a placement on a team.
