Jamaican artist, man of letters remembered

Public invited to tonight’s thanksgiving for Professor Rex Nettleford

The Cayman National Cultural
Foundation is inviting the public to a celebration of the life of the late Jamaican
artist and intellectual Professor Rex Nettleford tonight [Thursday, 11
February].

The
tribute, which will include readings from Professor Nettleford’s works, will be
held at the Harquail Theatre from 6.30pm.

The
orator, critic, mentor, trade unionist and Professor Emeritus of the University
of the West Indies had a long and fruitful association with the Cayman National
Cultural Foundation.

He
died at the George Washington University Hospital, Washington, on 2 February
following a heart attack on 27 January, a few hours short of his 77th
birthday.

The
Foundation’s Artistic Director Henry Muttoo said: “Professor Nettleford’s work
will remain, for a very long time, the standard by which regional academic and
creative excellence is judged. He has not only been a champion for the idea of
placing the arts on equal footing with every other subject in our schools’
curriculum but a living embodiment of what can be achieved by doing so.”

Oxford
University honoured Professor Nettleford on the Rhodes Centenary in 2003. Caricom
also honoured him in 2008 with the Caribbean’s highest award, the Order of the
Caribbean Community.

Throughout his life, Professor
Nettleford received 14 honourary degrees from universities including the
University of Toronto and the University of Oxford whose Oriel College also
made him one of its Fellows

As befits his career as a choreographer and dancer, Thursday’s
celebration and appreciation of Professor Nettleford’s life will also showcase performances
by the Kri Dance Company and Dance Unlimited as well as video of the National Dance
Theatre Company of Jamaica in concert.
