UCCI Caribbean Conference features author, scholar Meeks

The University College of the
Cayman Islands will be hosting the Caribbean Conference on Literature, Culture,
and Identity starting on Thursday, 11 March.

A press release states the two-day conference
marks the first time that that such a broad range of literary and cultural organisations
and individuals will come together from the Cayman community, regionally and
internationally. 

Author and scholar in the areas of
politics and culture Brian Meeks, director of the Sir Arthur Lewis Centre for
Social and Economic Studies at the University of the West Indies, Mona will be
delivering the keynote address on Thursday evening. 

Mr. Meeks is a Professor of Social
and Political Change at the University of the West Indies and one of the
founders of the Centre of Caribbean Thought. He is the former head of UWI’s
Department of Government and has written extensively on Caribbean politics and
political theory and culture.

Among his many accomplishments, Mr.
Meeks has completed visiting appointments at several universities throughout
the United States, including Florida International University in Miami;
Stanford, Brown, and Cambridge universities; and Michigan State University.

A programme of presentations begins
on Friday morning. Some thirty presenters, many drawn from the local community,
are scheduled mainly for panel discussions in breakout sessions.

Anyone interested in aspects of
culture, social development and identity, and regional literature is invited to
register.  To encourage a wide
cross-section of the community to attend, the local registration fee for the
