US airlines talk merger

Continental/United close to deal

Two of the biggest airlines in the
United States are in advanced discussions about a merger.

The deal, which could be announced
as early as Monday, would merge United Airlines with Continental into the
largest airline in the world in terms of revenue and market value.  The talks come after  last  Thursday’s announcement by US Airways that
they were no longer talking to United about a similar proposal.

United Airlines and US Airways have
previously discussed a link-up on a number of occasions.

In a statement, United said that
they believed that consolidation made sense in such a fragmented market.

“We thoughtfully consider
opportunities, based on what’s in the best interest of our company, our
employees, our customers, our shareholders and the communities we serve,” read
the release.
