MEPCO must be on quite a high right
now. Its High Rollers hockey team won its second straight regular season title
last week and are poised to collect their fourth straight Cherry Cup.
The first step in the march for
more glory is on Tuesday May 11 at 8pm. The WestTel arena of Kings Sports Centre
sees MEPCO challenge the Barracudas. After that the Budget Beavers take on the
CDMS Islanders at 9pm.
MEPCO are coming off a solid end to
the season in which they rattled off three straight wins. The High Rollers
capped off that streak by beating the Barracudas 7-3 last week.
Under captain Darryl Hather the
High Rollers finished the year at 7-3 just ahead of Budget (for the second
straight year). The Barracudas finished 3-7.
In spite of that recent form and
their golden history, Kings Athletic Director Ray Singh feels MEPCO are not guaranteed
to win on Tuesday.
“It’s the time of the season when
all the hard work just doesn’t mean anything any more,” Singh said. “It doesn’t
matter how you did the last 10 weeks, it’s the next three that determine our
Cherry Cup champion.
“MEPCO looks strong but they went
down to the Barracudas back on 13 April. The toughest game of the night is definitely
going to be between the Beavers and Islanders. Both teams have struggled the past
two weeks to pick up a win but they both have the potential to ultimately win
the Cherry Cup this year.”
