Ladies get their props before mix-up starts

The national netball league had
another great season this year and will cap it off with an awards ceremony on
Friday.

The Cayman Islands Netball
Association’s annual awards ceremony at the Harquail Theatre starts at 6.30pm
with an hors d’oeuvres reception. The presentations begin at 7pm.

The association will recognize
individuals and clubs for their achievements and contributions through the
2009–2010 netball season.

Among those slated to be honoured
are Roma netball club and Cayman National Bank All-Stars.

After three years of being
second-best to other teams, Roma finally claimed its first national title this
year. Led by the likes of Sudan Powell, Kay Copeland and Paula Hughes, the club
defeated perennial powers the Butler Properties All Stars 40-30 in the
division-one final. Roma finished the regular season 6-2, in second place to
the Butler All Stars (who were one of only two sides in this year’s league to
go unbeaten during the regular season at 8-0).

In its first year in the national
league, CNB placed second during the regular season of division two with a 3-3
mark. From there, the side earned a promotion to division one as Whitney
General, Martika Williams and Merary Eden guided the All Stars to a 34-11 win
over Rising Stars Money gram in the final.

News of the ceremony comes about a
month ahead of the annual mixed league. This year’s competition is slated to
begin 28 August with matches taking place at the netball courts at the Truman
Bodden Sports Complex. A number of changes are in store for this year’s tournament,
including the introduction of two divisions.

Most teams will undoubtedly have
their eyes on the All Stars netball club. Last year the club, with sponsorship
from Guy Harvey’s Ocean Foundation, secured the championship with a 28-13
victory over the World Gym Rising Stars. Local sportsmen Rhod Taylor and Andrew
Wisdom were key parts of the winning team, alongside netball stalwarts Cynthia
Collington and Kayon Clarke.

All association member umpires and volunteers, as well as fans and
family, are also invited to Friday’s awards ceremony. Dress code is smart
casual. For more information call 916–1944 or e–mail [email protected]
