To draw attention to an important
issue for the Cayman Islands, newly crowned Miss Earth, Samantha Widmer, toured
the Caybrew recycling plant on Monday.
Miss Widmer was chosen by N’Vogue
Productions as a goodwill ambassador and spokesperson for the Cayman Islands in
promoting environmental issues and tourism industries to fulfil the ideals of
‘beauties for a cause.’
Miss Widmer met with Caybrew
distribution manager Matthew Leslie and took a tour of the plant to learn about
the recycling process. Mr. Leslie explaining how returned bottles are washed
and put through a sterilisation process for re-use.
According to Mr. Leslie, customers
return about 90 percent of the bottles. “This helps the environment and
promotes the recycling programme,” he said.
“Most of the restaurants, bars and
hotels on island take part in the recycling programmes. Regular customers can
also take part by returning the empty bottles and getting an extra $2 off a
case of beer,” he added.
Mr. Leslie also said that in the
near future Caybrew will be looking into aluminium recycling as a new project.
As well as promoting the Caybrew
recycling programme, Miss Widmer also toured the Cayman Yellow Pages and
visited the Department of Tourism to assist with their coral reef research
project of the mangroves.
Miss Widmer will be leave for
Vietnam in the next few weeks to represent Cayman in promoting preservation of
the environment in the Miss Earth pageant.
On her return to Cayman, she will visit
the communities and work with residents in promoting the importance of recycling.
In order to become Miss Earth,
participants must get involved with projects to preserve the air, land and
water of the Cayman Islands and the world at large.
