How very disappoint to read in
Friday’s Weekender (29 October) that the Champions Series Tennis this year is
an all VIP event and only 200 people will be able to watch.
Last year, and the year before,
tickets were available to tennis fans from all walks of life – there were the
VIP packages, gold seats, silver seats and bleacher seats and it was very
entertaining tennis, especially the doubles matches. Tennis fans from all over
the Islands came (we were sitting next to two ladies from Cayman Brac last
year).
This year it appears only the elite
will be watching and I suspect that a lot of them are not avid tennis fans; and
what about the children and teenagers, our up and coming tennis stars of
tomorrow. I’m sure there won’t be many of them, if any, at this VIP event.
What a shame to bring these six top
tennis players all the way to Cayman only to play in front of a small crowd of
200 people. It seems to contradict what the article quotes Jim Courier as
saying, i.e. taking tennis to people in Cayman who rarely have an opportunity
to see top tennis players!
Shame on the organisers.
