Pac must swerve Serg

Manny Pacquiao seems to have run out of credible opponents the same size as him so there is plenty of talk of the Filipino legend fighting

Sergio Martinez at 155lbs catch weight.

Cayman’s own Charles ‘The Killa’ Whittaker almost got a fight with Martinez a year ago but they are roughly the same weight. For Pacquiao to fight Argentinian Martinez would be a foolish and totally unnecessary match. He is simply too big and strong. Martinez confirmed his place as No.3 pound-for-pound fighter by smashing Paul Williams with a deadly left hook in the second round on Saturday.

The ridiculously inept referee started counting even though Williams fell face first and was evidently out cold. He could have counted to 25,000 and Williams probably would not have come round had the medics not intervened. The same thing could happen to Pacquiao if he took the fight.

Pacquiao gave another virtuoso performance when he won the WBC super-welterweight title by beating Antonio Margarito two weeks ago while Martinez retained the WBC middleweight belt. Pacman’s promoter Bob Arum said it was absurd to pitch his jewel in with Martinez and even if Pacquiao won the wear and tear on his body and general health could have serious repercussions.

In beating Margarito, Pacquiao admitted to being pretty badly hurt. He weighed 148lbs to the Mexican’s 165, a 17lbs weight differential, a huge gap. Martinez is prepared to fight at a catch weight of 155lbs, five lower than the middleweight limit, but he’s likely to be over 170lbs by fight time.

Meanwhile, Arum continues to try to entice Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather in the ring with Pacquiao at welterweight. If not, the faded and relatively easy to beat Shane Mosley waits in the wings. It says a lot about boxing’s demise when the one of the two best fighters in the world is unwilling to make a match simply because he is too scared.
