This year’s Pirates Week National Song Contest was, as usual, quite an entertaining spectacle, which featured material and acts that ranged from funny to serious and all shades in between.
The lineup was announced several weeks earlier, with a secret panel of three experienced and talented music professionals choosing ten finalists to compete on 12 November in front of a sea of people at the Street Dance, which followed an elaborate fireworks display.
The evening featured several notable performances by the contestants, all of whom had obviously taken pride not only their composition, but also in their presentation.
Every style of music was represented, from hip-hop to pop, to reggae and soca. In the end, however, there could only be first, second and third place winners.
First place went to Mikey Spade, who is known as a real threat when it comes to song competitions. He took home CI$3,000 as a result of his win, with a song titled Cayman We Love You. The catchy chant was a wonderful recount of all the things people can do while in the Cayman Islands and what to expect while at each location.
In fine fashion, Spade and two of his comrades took to the stage with a replica turtle and got the crowd in a fit of laughter before proceeding to deliver the prize-winning tune.
In second and third place were Twin Star and Reno Clantar, respectively, who each received CI$750.
