Manny Pacquiao is a massive boxing
role model for American actor Mark Wahlberg, who studied the Filipino legend’s
training for his latest film The Fighter.
Wahlberg is an ardent fan of the
eight-division champion and visits the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles each time
Pacquiao trains there.
Pacquiao served as Wahlberg’s model
in his portrayal of retired boxer Mickey ‘Irish’ Ward in The Fighter. Ward was
one of the best light-welterweights in the Nineties, cementing his legacy with
three terrific fights with the late Arturo Gatti.
Wahlberg has been following
Pacquiao’s career since he beat Oscar De La Hoya two years ago.
Meanwhile, celebrities and
politicians who attended Pacquiao’s victory party on Monday in Quezon City
renewed calls for him to fight the elusive Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather Jr who is
distracted at present by several impending court cases.
Promoter Bob Arum said he has
narrowed down his choices for Pacquiao’s next opponent to Shane Mosley, Juan
Manuel Marquez and Andre Berto. He ranks the faded Mosley as his first choice,
followed by Juan Manuel Marquez who Pacquiao has fought twice already, drawing
the first one and winning on a controversial points decision in the second.
Arum said the unbeaten Berto is a
long shot as he is still relatively unknown and wouldn’t generate much
interest. Boxing purists would actually like to see Pacquiao against Berto
because he is as quick as the Pacman and has an unblemished record.
