Kanyuira Gikonyo of the Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture and William Wagner of St. Matthew’s University represented the Cayman Islands at the recent Caribbean Veterinary Conference in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, hosted by the Jamaica Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Gikonyo was elected vice president of the Caribbean Veterinary Medical Association.
The group also selected venues for the next two conferences – in Trinidad and Tobago in 2012 and in the Cayman Islands in 2014.
“The Cayman Islands Veterinary Medical Association would like to congratulate Dr. Gikonyo on his newly elected position,” association president Brandy Darby said in a statement. “We are looking forward to hosting the Caribbean Veterinary Medical Conference in 2014. Hosting a conference of this magnitude is a first for the veterinary community of the Cayman Islands and is sure to keep our association busy with planning and preparations.”
Some 231 participants from the Caribbean, Central and South America, the US, Canada and India attended the conference, most of which was dedicated to academic sessions for veterinarians.
