The Cayman Islands Red Cross has officially closed it Japan Appeal.
The agency praised the residents of the Cayman Islands for their contributions to the Japan Twin Disaster Appeal launched following the earthquake and tsunami of 11 March, 2011.
More than US$19,000 was raised locally for the most vulnerable people affected by the disaster.
The funds will be used to assist Japan as it moves into the early recovery phase. One of the pressing needs identified by the Red Cross is health-care, as surveys suggest hat as much as 40 per cent of medical infrastructure, which includes hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and private practices, have been disrupted in three of the worst affected areas.
Money received after the closing of the appeal will be earmarked for national disaster preparedness and response activities for the Cayman Islands.
