Hoopsters prep for Island Games

Local basketball is one of many sports preparing for the Island Games.

A traditionally important competition for small nations, this year’s event takes place on the United Kingdom’s Isle of Wight in June. The national basketball team roster is nearly set and numerous activities are in the works ahead of the event.

For starters there will be a set of exhibition matches starring the national team players. The proposed dates are 9 and 12 June at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre. Their opponents are slated to be a select squad from this year’s national men’s basketball league.

That competition is in the midst of its playoffs. A number of past, present and potential national team members are involved including 6ft 5in forward Dwight O’Garro, 6ft 6in power forward Cory Thompson (both of the two-time defending champions Wolves) and 6ft 7in forward/centre Rotando Thompson (of the Dominos Warriors).

There is also an extended promotion to raise funds for the team’s trip. Called “Scratch for a Slam Dunk,” the Cayman Islands Basketball Association is selling $5 scratch cards. There is a top prize of $10,000 cash on offer along with other giveaways such as T-shirts, key chains and a 20 per cent discount on apparel at Reflections Godfrey Nixon Way. Kelly Holding helped the association with the promotion when it first ran in March and April.
