Azul made Filipinos blue

John-Paul Azul may be a role a player but team Philippines missed his star potential.

Azul tossed up a handful three-pointers in a losing effort as his squad was eliminated in the division one playoffs. Two-time defending champions Wolves would sweep the Filipinos in two games. Azul would only suit up for the second and decisive contest after returning from a sprained ankle that kept him out of matches down the stretch.

The Philippines native was a big part of his side’s success this year. In his rookie season in local basketball he ended up third on the team in scoring (averaging 11.1 points per game), second in assists (averaging 4.6 assists) and fourth in three-pointers made with nine. Team Philippines would end up third in the rankings with a 7-5 mark.

Star players Christian Ferrer and Chris Lucas carried the load as expected throughout the year. In the regular season they were team Philippines’ top scorers and were near the top of the league in scoring.

Against the Wolves they paced their club in that category with Lucas going off for 24 points and 14 rebounds. However both stated going into the series that Azul would be a difference-maker.
