Sprint hurdler Ronald Forbes is in brilliant early season form after overcoming a series of injuries and that was evident over the weekend when he set a new Cayman national record in the 110 metres hurdles.
Forbes competed at a meet in South Florida and ran 13.50 seconds with a 1.8 metres/second tail wind to set the record. It was also an A standard qualification time to compete in the world championships in Korea in August and next year’s London Olympics.
“I felt really excited after crossing the line but knew that some mistakes were made and I still had the finals to go an hour later,” Forbes said. “I went back to my coach Joey Scott for comments and suggestions.
“I felt unsatisfied for a bit and decided to do something about it, had a great warm up for the finals and regained focus. In the finals I ran a 13:24 secs and waited on the wind reading but it came back 2.8 metres/secs. It was over the legal limit by 0.8. If that time had held up, it would have broken my personal best time by three-tenths of a second in one day and put me at No.7 in the world rankings for this year so far.
“It just goes to show that there is more to come.
That final round felt superb. I’m scheduled to go again this weekend at a meet in Miramar. This is very exciting news to my family and the Islands and I’m just praying to stay healthy, humble and continue to do great things.”
Forbes competes in the USATF Florida Elite Open on Saturday and possibly at the Jamaica national trails on 23 June. “I feel real excited for the next two meetings. I really hope to lower the national record again and surpass my Olympic performance of 2008 which was 13:59secs, months ahead of the world championships.”
