Mancini: Aguero is carbon copy of legendary Brazilian star Romario

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini described Sergio Aguero as a “photocopy” of Brazilian legend Romario after the Argentine’s superb debut against Swansea on Monday night.

The £38m signing scored two and created another in the hosts’ 4-0 victory, prompting comparisons with a player who scored nearly 1,000 career goals.

“Sergio is a photocopy of Romario, they are the same player,” said Mancini. “He is not 100 per cent yet but he is going to be fantastic for us.”

Aguero came on as a second-half substitute with Man City leading 1-0, after being held back by Mancini following the 23 year-old’s exploits for Argentina in the recent Copa America.

But his impact was immediate, almost scoring with his first touch before bagging two, creating one and showing some fine touches as well as an irrepressible work ethic.

Swansea simply had no answer to the former Atletico Madrid striker’s quality – and Mancini’s men were inspired as they cantered to an encouraging season-opening victory.

“It was the perfect start,” said Mancini. “It was important to start the season very well and it was important to score the goals and score with the strikers.

“I know Aguero very well but I don’t think he is 100 per cent. He played in the Copa America and he needs to do more in training. But I am happy because he scored two important goals.”

Not that Manchester City had things all their own way; Swansea completed 486 passes in the match, more than any other side in the Premier League this weekend and 144 more than Manchester City.

Mancini offered words of encouragement to the Premier League new-boys, saying: “In the first half especially, Swansea played very well.”

Swans boss Brendan Rodgers looked for the positives too, saying: “I thought overall the result – although there were some fantastic goals – was harsh on our team.

“For the first hour the players showed great confidence and great quality on the ball and we looked like we could be a real threat.

“You come off the pitch having been beaten 4-0 but I said to my players, ‘Congratulations, you have put on a terrific show tonight’. We will get better and go again on Saturday.”

Man City are next in action this Saturday 20 August against Bolton while Swansea face Wigan.
