Fosters meet swims on

Open water swimming in the Cayman Islands is bracing for its next big meet.

The 27th annual Fosters Food Fair 800 metre swim is slated for Saturday, 17 September. The meet is part of the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association sea swim calendar. It is usually the first event after the summer break.

Seiji Groome and Lara Butler are the two-time defending champions. Both are expected to return to defend their titles and improve on their times. Groome was first overall last year with a mark of nine minutes, 31 seconds, while Butler was the first woman home in 10 minutes, 21 seconds.

The swim also has featured successful showings from teenage swimmers. Most of the 2010 top finishers were in the under-20 bracket and featured established names such as Geoffrey Butler (who was second in 9.46), Alex McCallum (who was third in 9.48) and Andrew Smilley (who placed sixth in 10.33).

Preregistration is available online at caymanactive.com until noon on Friday, 16 September. As usual, race day registration and check-in is slated for 3 to 3.45pm at Governor’s Beach with a 4pm race time. As always, the race finishes at Public Beach, with refreshments, age group awards and T-shirts available.
