Powerlifting is another recently introduced sporting option in the Cayman Islands and the coach Tony McInerney will be competing this weekend alongside a newcomer to the sport, Daniel ‘The Bear’ Christian.
Christian, 21, is also a boxer at the D. Dalmain Ebanks Boxing Gymnasium. Since taking up the sport a year ago has improved his previously limited mobility immensely. His boxing skills improved so quickly that earlier this year Christian boxed an exhibition bout with Charles ‘The Killa’ Whittaker. He will be competing in the junior division of the North American Regional Bench Press Championships in Miami on Saturday.
Encouraged to start weight-lifting by his soon-to-be step-father Clinton Mohammed, who is a personal trainer and former body builder, Christian has been training for only two months with coach McInerney who is a member of the North American Powerlifting Federation.
Powerlifting in Cayman has been looking for new blood since staging the Caribean Championships here earlier this year. Two world record attempts were done at that competition.
Daniel’s proud mum Liza said: “I’ll definitely be there to cheer Daniel on. I am very proud of him and all that he has accomplished. He has tremendous potential in weight-lifting and I look forward to the personal experience he will gain by representing the Cayman Islands in this sport.”
