As expected heavy rains stalled a drag race at Breaker Speedway.
Now the Cayman Islands Drag Racing Association is expected to host its ‘Monster Dash’ meet at the 1/8 mile track this Sunday, 6 November. According to association marketing officer Michael Webster plans are in place in the event of more inclement weather.
“Last Sunday’s race was postponed because of the possibility of rain,” Webster said. “Hopefully it won’t rain this weekend, but if it does, a decision will be made at that time. We hope to have these last two races, now 6 November and 11 December, be very family-orientated with lots of action and cars racing.”
Much of the heavy rains came from the passing of Hurricane Rina last week. The motorsports scene was particularly affected as the drag race was cancelled in addition to the last autocross meet in the Cayman Motorsports Association Time Attack series.
Heading into this weekend the focus should still be on the major drivers. Tom Kirkconnell and Donald Francis are expected to do battle for the Front Wheel Drive record in their turbocharged Honda Civics. Sammy Jackson in his Chevy Camaro and Ronnie Forbes in his Chevy-powered Mercedez Benz should also be tussling for bragging rights in the five second class.
Going forward motorsports will see a couple of races to end 2011. Autocross closes out the year with the Al and Jay Bodden Memorial on 27 November at the Progressive Loop. On the drag side, the drag racing association will stage a meet on 11 December. As Webster states the December event will be wholly staged by sponsors NAPA.
“The December race is fully going to be done by NAPA. We hope to have a few giveaways. We still have no idea the truth behind what is taking place with the track after December. But, from what we heard, Breakers Speedway owner Robert Campbell has leased it out and it won’t be used for racing again. But we also heard that possibly another track will be in the works soon, we hope by the Cayman Hot Rod Association.”
