As professions go, a career in law and a career as a painter are about as far removed from one another as it is possible to get. Dana Lowe, however, has managed to cover both, so far.
Born in Scottsdale, Arizona but brought up in the UK, Dana studied law at university and worked as a solicitor until she started a family. With young children to take care of, she needed more flexibility, and so moved into lecturing in law at postgraduate level, which allowed her the possibility to work from home.
After her first son was born, she and her husband, who is also a lawyer, moved to Australia. They have moved country nine times since then, this being their second time in Cayman.
Wherever they have been, however, Dana has attended exhibitions and pursued different art classes and now makes art her full time occupation.
Dana has two very different styles, both of which will be on display at Full of Beans for the month of November. She paints vibrantly coloured abstract patterns in oil and acrylic, a style she says was influenced by Mark Rothko and Howard Hodgkin, and “their differing uses of bold and expressive colour.”
Dana also draws and prints people, working from photographs. She is particularly adept at revealing her subjects’ personality through their physical poses.
Dana has been focusing on her art since 1998, and is studying for a Masters in Fine Art, which she hopes to complete in the next year. This will be her ninth exhibition.
