Art auction for new gallery

The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands has recently launched several fundraising initiatives in order to raise the last of the money needed to complete a new facility.

The capital fundraising drive began 10 years ago with an auction, so it is fitting that it should also end with an art auction.

Among a number of other initiatives launched by the National Gallery to close the Capital Building Fund, it reached out to several local artists it supports and asked them to donate works of art to the Big Arts Auction.

Their pieces will be on display to the public at the National Gallery at Harbour Place from 4-24 November, the last day the gallery is open to the public in this location.

The works will then be auctioned off with 100 per cent of the proceeds going toward funding the building project.

Al Ebanks, Nasaria Suckoo-Chollette, Randy Chollette, Avril Ward, Chris Christian, Greg Lipton, Teresa Grimes, Mike Seffer, Renate Seffer, David Bridgeman, Chris Mann, Hannah Cook, Gordon Solomon, Nickola McCoy-Snell, Wray Banker, Bendel Hydes, CE Whitney, Carol Owen, John Broad, Zoe Blount and Joanne Sibley all donated works of art to the cause.

At the end of January, the National Gallery will open in its new location, off the Esterly Tibbets Highway. In addition to being able to provide a permanent exhibition space for the National Collection and a separate temporary exhibition space, there will be an education centre complete with auditorium, library and art studio as well as landscaped gardens which it is hoped will be used by the community for events, picnics, weddings and more.
