The Lean on Me committee is holding a collection drive at Smith Cove on Saturday to collect food, clothing and gifts for families in need this Christmas.
The group is collecting supermarket food vouchers, cash donations, non-perishable food, toys, clothing and other donations from members of the public at the beach from 10am to 4.30pm on Saturday, 10 December.
Derri Lee of Lean on Me said the number of families in need this year seemed higher than previously.
“There’s definitely a greater need this year than last year because people’s financial positions are worse and there have been a lot of job layoffs this year,” she said.
While food donations are welcome, Ms Lee said vouchers from supermarkets would also be helpful as then families could buy the items they need. People may also donate unused toys and clothing in good condition.
“Last year, we were collecting more for the children, looking for toys and using money collected to buy things like movie ticket vouchers, but this year, we’re focusing more on the entire family,” Ms Lee said.
This year, Lean on Me is collecting for 12 families and will deliver the donations to them in the days before Christmas.
