Stella, by Siegfried Lenz, is the novel that will be discussed at this month’s Caribbean Reading Club, which meets at Books and Books, Camana Bay on Wednesday, 11 January.

Stella is the story of an illicit summer romance: A teenager falls in love with his English professor in a small town on the Baltic coast.

The summer they spend together is filled with boat rides to Bird Island, secret walks on the beach and furtive glances.

The emotions that blossom between Christian and Stella are aflame with passion and innocence, and with an idealistic hope of a future. The two lovers manage to keep their mutual attraction concealed, but as the hot months come to an end, their meetings become more difficult to conceal.

The tale of first love is told is told in dramatically sparse prose that has been likened in style to Ernest Hemingway.

The Caribbean Reading Club meets at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of every month and is facilitated by English teacher Shari Wilson.

Meetings usually last around one hour and are open to anybody wishing to attend.
