Recently, Dayne Brady, General Manager of Home Gas, shared his thoughts about the importance of building and maintaining quality relationships, both inside and outside the company.
DAYNE: Sustaining positive relationships with our customers and with the community at large is the foundation of everything we do at Home Gas. As this company has grown over the past 55 years, so too have the many ways we serve our customers and work closely with the government and the Chamber to benefit Cayman.
Q: WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS?
DAYNE: Be visible; be responsive, be approachable – to customers and community alike. Establish trust, be personable and operate with complete integrity in all that you do. Forming good relationships will have long-term positive outcomes. We are more than just the gas company – we’re also a community pillar in which the public can place its confidence.
Q: WITHIN HOME GAS – HOW DO YOU FOSTER POSITIVE EMPLOYEE RELATIONSHIPS?
DAYNE: Each employee is a unique individual. Encouraging a team approach based on the employee’s strengths and weaknesses is the best way to ensure healthy intercompany relationships that result in improved customer relations. Without this sense of camaraderie, disputes and misunderstandings may result.
Periodic team meetings allow for review of procedures, improving outcomes and interpersonal relationships. The group meetings we hold are excellent for improving communication within our business, and each individual in encouraged to contribute to the discussions.
Home Gas is committed to our employees’ health and well-being. We offer free CETP-training and skill development for optimal job performance and advancement within the company. Preparedness and updating skills builds confidence, job enthusiasm and satisfaction.
Workers are given the resources and tools they need to do a good job. This leads to higher levels of employee commitment and helps demonstrate that our management team cares about them. Home Gas wants to ensure that each employee is compensated fairly and that they are competent in their assigned duties with Home Gas to offer the safest and cleanest energy in the Cayman Islands.
Q: HOW CLOSELY DOES HOME GAS WORK WITH OUR GOVERNMENT?
DAYNE: Our relationship with Planning and BCU has grown considerably over the years. We provide training to inspectors so that, as a team, we ensure that the residents of the Cayman Islands are able to utilize the benefits of propane and have the peace of mind that their installation is safe.
We work hand and hand in regulation and its enforcement. Enforcement is the key to a safe installation and a safe installation makes for a happy customer. Working closely with Planning and BCU is an essential part of the healthy growth of the propane industry in Cayman.
Again, knowledge is confidence and by working with both entities closely we have built a level of trust that has enabled Home Gas Ltd to grow and bring new technology and savings to the residents of the Cayman Islands.
Q: WHAT OTHER KINDS OF THINGS ARE YOU DOING IN THE COMMUNITY?
DAYNE: We launched a community wide safety awareness program called “Cook Smart, Safety First” to teach the public how to use propane responsibly and in accordance with the safety rules governing it.
It is our responsibility to educate the public about the safe use of propane. In doing so, we help allay any fears of using the most environmentally friendly form of fuel energy available here.
We work closely with and also provide in-depth training for Cayman Island Fire Services. With ever evolving technology in the propane industry, Home Gas makes sure that the Cayman Islands Fire service is aware of changes and how to handle emergencies. This training is free of charge and offered yearly.
Home Gas was asked to join the National Energy Policy Committee because propane is recognized as one the most viable alternative energy solutions in the Cayman Islands. With Home Gas being the supplier of propane for Cayman, it only makes sense that we would be the authority on the benefits of propane and how the country on a national level can use propane to save money and our environment.
As a good corporate citizen, we’re actively involved in helping our community. Whether it’s helping in emergencies, hurricanes, floods, accidents, etc. or even resolving plumbing issues, rescuing animals, and training other companies to help people here become comfortable with using propane – it’s all in a days work… and we’re doing it one relationship at a time.
