The Ministry of Community Affairs, Gender and Housing appointed five members to serve on Cayman’s first Gender Equality Tribunal last week.
The tribunal is created as part of the country’s Gender Equality Law, passed by legislators last year and which came into effect on 31 January.
The tribunal members, who are appointed by the governor, will hear and rule on workplace discrimination complaints.
The appointees include tribunal chairperson Sheridan Brooks, and members Karie Bergstrom, Shaun Cockle, André Ebanks and Tammy Ebanks.
“After thorough consideration, I am pleased to announce the names of the five qualified individuals who have committed to this initiative,” said Mike Adam, the minister responsible for gender affairs. “I am confident that this tribunal will help improve work environments, so men and women can enjoy equal opportunities.” Discrimination against an individual on the basis of gender, marital status, or pregnancy is now illegal in Cayman. A complaint on those grounds can be made to the tribunal within six months from the date of the incident.
